Why Add Charcoal and Wood Ash to Orchids?

Charcoal and wood ash can offer significant benefits to orchids when used correctly. Here’s why you should consider adding them to your orchid care routine:

Adding Charcoal to the Orchid Pot:

  • Benefits: Charcoal is porous and helps absorb excess salts from water, preventing root burn. It also aids in balancing the pH level in the potting medium and possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • Type of Charcoal: Use pure charcoal from sources like burnt wood or unused barbecue charcoal. Avoid charcoal that may contain grease or additives.
  • How to Use: Simply place orchids in pots filled with charcoal, ensuring to wash any leftover residue from cooking charcoal before use. Alternatively, create a potting mix with equal parts charcoal, bark, and perlite for a well-drained substrate.

Adding Wood Ash to the Orchid Pot:

  • Benefits: Wood ash is rich in calcium, potassium, phosphorus, and silica, promoting orchid growth and flowering. It can also help neutralize acidic soil and prevent root rot due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • Type of Ash: Use wood ash rather than pellets, as pellets may contain harmful chemicals. Ensure the ash is free from additives and chemicals.
  • How to Use:
    1. For Plant Wounds: Apply a small amount of ash to plant wounds to aid in healing and deter bacteria.
    2. Homemade Fertilizer: Mix 3 tablespoons of wood ash with 500 ml of water, let it sit overnight, and use the next day. Apply a small amount (2 tablespoons) to the bottom of the pot, avoiding direct contact with roots. Use no more than once a month to prevent root burn.
    3. Mold on Roots: Lightly dust affected roots with ash to combat mold growth, but use cinnamon for prolonged prevention and avoid overapplication.

By incorporating charcoal and wood ash into your orchid care routine, you can enhance soil quality, promote plant health, and encourage robust growth and blooming.
