What is Damping Off?

Damping off is a fungal disease caused by filamentous parasitic fungi, and it commonly affects young plants. The disease manifests as brown spots on the plants, causing them to weaken and eventually fall over and die. The fungi responsible for damping off enter through wounds caused by insects, germinate, and grow in plant tissues. Excessive moisture is a significant factor in the development of damping off.

How to Avoid Damping Off:

Prepare a Good Seedbed:

Use a germination kit to plant seeds at the right distance from each other and under suitable temperature and time conditions.

The fungus thrives in a humid and cold environment, so avoid planting seeds too deeply.

Pay attention to greenhouse crops as they are more susceptible to damping off.

Use Charcoal:

Charcoal has the ability to absorb fungus and excess moisture.

Use finely ground charcoal powder to spread over the soil in pots.

Avoid using barbecue charcoal; instead, grind charcoal into powder using a grater.

Feed the Soil Regularly:

Use quality seeds and soak them in water at 50°C to disinfect them.

Disinfect gardening tools before use to prevent the transmission of diseases.

Use nutrient-rich soil to prevent disease spread.

Consider using juniper silk blend as a soil conditioner once a week until plants emerge.

Garlic Infusion:

Garlic has antifungal and bacterial properties.

Prepare a mixture by finely chopping 500g of garlic and boiling them in 5 liters of water for half an hour.

Let the mixture cool, filter it, and place the liquid in a spray bottle.

Spray plants before emergence, in the morning and evening.

Baking Soda:

Mix 1 tsp of baking soda with 1 liter of water and add 1 tbsp of black soap.

Spray the soil with this mixture to combat damping off.

These preventive measures aim to create a healthier environment for young plants, minimizing the risk of damping off. Regular care, proper soil preparation, and the use of natural substances contribute to the overall well-being of plants and reduce the likelihood of fungal diseases.
