Plants are one of the best living beings to have both indoors and outdoors because they not only purify the air we breathe, but also wonderfully decorate our home, harmonizing it and giving it good energy.
But many times we encounter the problem that we forget to water them or it is difficult for us to do so because there are many of them, so in today’s article we will share with you how to make an automatic self-watering pot so that you can continue enjoying the pleasure of having plants. In your home.

Self-watering pot – automatic
If you love plants and also recycle or reuse resources such as plastic, in this article we will share with you how to make an automatic self-watering pot with a plastic bottle and other ingredients that you surely have in the comfort of your home. Let’s do it!
What I need?
- plastic bottle (any size you want)
- cuter
- scissors
- piece of cloth or cotton rope
- thread
- needle
- seeds you want to plant
- sprayer or sprayer
- water
Step by Step:
- The first thing you should do is take the bottle and cut it approximately in half. You can do it with a small bottle or a larger one, depending on the size of the pot you are interested in having. Then you must rotate the bottle so that the cut is complete and there are half and half of the bottle to be used
- When you have the two halves separated, you should try placing the upper part of the bottle (the one with the lid) upside down inside the lower part of the bottle (that is, you will have the lid of the bottle pointing near the internal base of the bottle). bottle) to confirm that it fits correctly
- Between the bottle cap and the base there should be approximately two fingers free to use as a water tank later.
- Then you will have to cut the top part of the top bottle (the one with the lid, on the side that does not have the lid) that you will not use (calculate how much substrate you will use and how much plastic you have left over) to prevent moisture from remaining there and potentially causing fungi or other undesirable microorganisms
- Once you have this ready you must place it back inside the top of the bottle (with the cap facing in as before)
- Then you must roll up the piece of fabric that you have and with the thread and needle sew this rolled up piece of fabric so that it does not come off. Don’t worry about its prolixity but because it is useful and remember to leave the ending part open
- Now you must place this piece of fabric that we will call the wick inside the cap of the bottle that has a lid. So with the cutter you must make a cross-shaped hole and insert the wick there. There should be 1/3 of the length of the piece of fabric left inside the bottle
- Now you must place the substrate you want inside the pot (the upper part of the bottle that has a lid, with the lid facing down). Make sure the wick is approximately in the center of the pot and fill it to the top with soil.
- Then you must place the water at the bottom of the pot, in the water tank. This will moisten the wick – the piece of fabric – and this will draw water to the substrate on top.
- Then it will be time to place the seeds of the plant you want to plant and place a little more substrate on top so it can grow from there.
- You will have to add a little water with a sprinkler or sprayer and you will have the self-watering pot ready.
Plus so that your self-watering pot is also a germinator
If you want to add a germinator to this excellent and useful self-watering pot , it is very simple and we will explain how to do it so that your seeds grow quickly.
What I need?
- The bottom of another bottle (just 7cm will be enough to do it)
- scissors
Step by Step:
- The first thing you should do is drill a hole in the base of the bottle.
- Once you have it drilled, you must place it above the self-watering pot – which you made when it is ready with its soil, seeds and watered (the lid part on top and the open part on the bottom, fitting it with the bottle with substrate and seeds planted). to generate moisture and help seeds germinate more easily and successfully
