Summer is just around the corner, bringing with it the season of juicy and flavorful tomatoes. To ensure a healthy and abundant harvest, it’s crucial to provide your tomato plants with the right support. Whether made from wood, string, metal, or plastic, a sturdy stake will protect your plants from diseases, enhance air circulation, and maximize sun exposure. Here’s your detailed guide on making an economical tomato support!

How to Make a Tomato Stand?
While you can find a variety of ready-to-use stakes in stores, they often come with a hefty price tag. The solution? Opt for DIY alternatives! Using recycled materials for staking your tomatoes is not only economical but also highly effective in ensuring a healthy harvest. You have plenty of options: wooden stakes, metal, PVC, string, bamboo, wire mesh, and rope. Here’s how to create your own!
1. Bamboo Stakes

Bamboo canes are straight and perfect for staking tomato plants. Their smooth surface allows for easy plant ties. You can create V-shaped or teepee-shaped supports with bamboo.
Materials Needed:
- Bamboo poles (at least 1.5 meters long)
- Gardening twine or plant ties
- Secateurs
Instructions:
- Preparation: Cut the bamboo sticks to your desired length.
- Installation: Push the bamboo poles about 30 cm into the ground, 5-10 cm from the base of each tomato plant.
- Ties: Use garden twine to gently tie the tomato stems to the bamboo, forming loose loops to avoid damaging the plants.
2. Tree Branch Tutor
Using wooden branches is another great option. Choose sturdy, water-resistant types like hazel, chestnut, or acacia. Select straight branches about 1.5 meters long, removing any small branches or leaves.
Instructions:
- Plant the branches next to the tomato plants.
- Tie the plants to the branches using twine.
3. Staking with String or Rope

This method is excellent for greenhouse cultivation. Suspend a rope or twine vertically above the tomato plants, allowing the plants to wrap around it for support.
4. PVC Pipes
While not the most eco-friendly option, PVC pipes make a durable tomato support.
Materials Needed:
- PVC pipes (1.5 to 2 meters long)
- Hacksaw
- String (or raffia, hemp rope)
Instructions:
- Cut the PVC pipes to your desired length using a hacksaw.
- Push the pipes into the soil next to the tomato plants.
- Tie the plant stems to the PVC using plastic-coated wire, hemp rope, or twine.
5. Metal Tutor

Metal supports are highly weather-resistant and sturdy. Instead of buying spiral stakes, you can create your own using rebar. Keep in mind that metal may rust, especially with a drip irrigation system.
6. Wire Mesh or Cage Stakes
Also known as wire mesh stakes, this method is practical for greenhouse and open-field cultivation. Although it takes up space, it provides excellent support for your tomato plants.
Instructions:
- Use sheep wire or recycled metal mesh to create a cage.
- Ideally, the cage should measure at least 1.5 meters high and 60 cm wide.
- The branches and stems of your tomato plants can easily tangle in the mesh, eliminating the need for additional ties.
With these economical ideas, you can create effective supports for your tomato plants and enjoy a bountiful harvest this summer!
