How to Prune a Fig Tree that is Too Tall?
Pruning a fig tree, whether it’s too tall or an old tree, is crucial for maintaining its health and productivity. Here are some simple tips to guide you through the process:

1. Tools for Pruning:
- Wear gloves to protect yourself from tool blades and the sap, which can be irritating.
- Use pruning shears or handle shears for small-diameter branches.
- Employ a pruner for branches that are located too high.
- Use a pruning saw for larger branches (from 5 cm in diameter).
2. When to Prune:
- Prune the fig tree after harvesting the figs, either in November for milder climates or in February for regions with harsh winters.
- Maintenance pruning aims to eliminate branches that disrupt the general shape of the tree and improve light circulation between branches.
3. Pruning an Old Fig Tree (Rejuvenation Pruning):
- Rejuvenation pruning involves severe cutting, bringing all branches down to the level of the stump.
- This type of pruning is done every 20 to 25 years.
- It’s possible to prune an old fig tree gradually for safety, but it’s a very resilient tree.
4. Pruning a Fig Tree Trained into a Trumpet Shape:
- Fold the trunks that constitute the vine approximately 50 cm from the ground.
- Perform the pruning gradually over 2 or 3 years to maintain terminal buds and allow for the sprouting of new branches.

5. Pruning an Old Single-Trunk Fig Tree:
- Cut back the main branches 50 cm from the end of the trunk.
- The tree will send out numerous branches at the ends of the fallen branches.
- Keep half of them and lightly trim the remaining ones in June.
6. Transforming an Old Single-Trunk Fig Tree into a Stem Fig Tree:
- Fold the trunk almost to ground level.
- Keep the strongest suckers, cutting them back slightly for branching.
- This method makes fruit picking easier.
Pruning your fig tree correctly promotes its overall health, encourages new growth, and ensures a bountiful harvest. Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and productivity of your fig tree.
