There is a better way to wake up a slow vegetable bed. Skip the baking soda, identify what is holding the plants back, and feed according to their stage of growth. The change may not happen overnight, but it protects the soil and produces stronger results that last.

Baking Soda Is Not Vegetable Fertilizer

Baking soda contains sodium and bicarbonate. It does not supply the balanced nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and trace nutrients that fruiting plants require. Repeated soil applications may increase sodium around roots, interfere with water uptake, and damage soil structure.

Baker’s yeast is also misunderstood. It is alive and contains useful compounds, but that does not make a homemade yeast drink a complete or predictable fertilizer. Fermentation with sugar may attract insects and create odors. Research products made from controlled yeast extracts are not the same as a kitchen jar left on a counter.
