How to Attract Greenfinches?

Greenfinches can be attracted to your garden with a few simple steps:

  1. Understand Their Characteristics:
    • Size: 14 to 16 cm
    • Weight: 25 to 35 grams
    • Conical pink to beige beak
    • Short and forked tail
    • Pink legs
    • Male: Olive green with a yellow band on flight feathers and yellow streaks on the tail
    • Female: Duller, tends towards gray, and has less defined yellow spots than the male.
  2. Know Their Habitat:
    • Open environments including urban areas, glades, forest edges, gardens, parks, and orchards.
    • Also found in agricultural areas for collecting seeds.
    • Nest in shrubs or trees with evergreen or dense foliage, and they like hiding in ivy.
  3. Provide Suitable Nesting Conditions:
    • Clean nest boxes to avoid parasites.
    • European greenfinches have been affected by Trichomonosis, a parasitic respiratory disease transmitted through contaminated feeders and drinkers.
  4. Food for Greenfinches:
    • Wheat seeds: Composed of starch and protein. Place on a ground support to avoid contact with humidity.
    • Barley seeds: Rich in soluble fiber, vitamin D, beta-glucan, magnesium, and phosphorus.
    • Corn seeds: Rich in vitamin B, vitamin C, fiber, proteins, and minerals.
    • Greenfinches have a conical beak suitable for decorticating seeds.
  5. Offer Variety:
    • Greenfinches also enjoy invertebrates, small fruits, sunflower seeds, and unsalted peanuts.

Note: Greenfinches have been facing challenges due to Trichomonosis, so maintaining cleanliness in their environment, especially in feeders and drinkers, is crucial.

Attracting greenfinches to your garden requires understanding their characteristics, providing suitable nesting conditions, and offering a diverse range of seeds and foods that cater to their preferences.
